Scenery for FS2000
Pierce County - Thun Field Puyallup, Washington

Introduction:

Thun Field is located just south of Puyallup, Washington, a short flight from Seattle, Tacoma, and the Portland area. Catering mostly to the general aircraft pilot, this field was another of my favorite destinations when I used to fly skyhawks from the Seattle area. The Hangar Inn features good food and a great porch for plane watching in good weather. The aircraft based at Thun are many and varied. Back in the 80's there was a tiny one man jet sponsored by Coors, called the silver bullet. It flew in all the local air shows and was based here at Thun.

All structures in this scenery are photorealistic. The ground polygon is made from the USGS doqq aerial photograph.

The airport was designed using ASDver2.1. The macros were made with Abacus FSDS. Static Planes and trees were designed with Airport 2.6.

The project:

One thing I enjoy about scenery design is the people I've met. One day I received an email from Ron Vorak. It turns out Ron has quite a bit of experience with design, but he hadn't tried to make his own textures and make his own macros before. He asked if we could do a project together so he could learn some of my techniques, and share some of his. We chose the airport near his home, Ron offered to supply the photographs, and the project was on!

New Style Ground Polygon:

If you've downloaded some of my other airports, you may remember duplicate ground polygons, one for each major texture set. I was using a technique that allowed for the entire doqq photo to show and I was blending the photo into the default textures. I tried something new with this work. The ideas came from some experiments Ken Nelson and I were fooling with. I had the pleasure of showing Ken how to use photos for the ground, and then he did something I'd not thought of...he used transparency to allow much of the default to show. After getting some important advice from Martin Wright, I tried out Ken's approach. It simplified the process for me and simplified the install. Now the seasons and the textures should blend well no matter what texture set you use.

Aircraft:

Thanks to Ron Vorak, we have some fantastic aircraft parked at Thun. Look for one of Ron's planes that's slightly "hidden"! Ron also supplied many of the trees for the project.

Frame Rates:

As this scenery is fairly dense, it may drive your stuttering up a bit. My apologies, I love the eye candy detail. Slower machines may not run this scenery acceptably.

Installation:

I recommend installing this scenery into a folder remote from your main fs2000 scenery directory. Name the folder anything you like and make a subdirectory named "scenery", another named "texture".

Extract the contents of scenery.zip into your scenery subdirectory. Extract the contents of both texture.zip files into your texture subdirectory.

Start FS2000 and "add" the new scenery in the library under the world|library pull down menu in fs2000.

No Exclude Switch Needed!
The exclude is supplied as part of the bgl files.

Standard Textures are needed: For some of the trees to look right you will need to download the standard ASDver2 textures and the Airport standard textures. They are both available from www.fsgenesis.com.

Thanks and Appreciation:

Thanks to Ron Vorak, my partner on this project. It's been fun working with you!

Ken Meier, thanks for beta testing and general morale boosts

And thanks to James Bond, another of my local Washington simming friends, beta tester, and scenery designer.

Ken Nelson, each time we work together I learn new techniques. Thanks to you, "bro"!

Martin Wright, thanks for helping me understand the visual artifact on the edge of transparent textures.

And many thanks to the tool makers:
Manfred Moldenhauer - SCASM
Peter Jacobsen - ASD
Rafael Sanchez - Visual Object Designer 3.0.
Louis Sinclair - FSDS
Martin Wright - BMP2000

Notes from Ron Vorak:
Apt.2.6 Upgrade by Tom Hiscox. Thanks Tom.

Thanks to the many Freeware Aircraft authors. They
are too many to list, but I will list a few. I thank
Fred Banting, for his fine Otter, Eric Johnson original author, Repaint
By Dana McGee Cessna 177rg , And last but not least Barry Bliesdell, For his DHC6LO98 Twin Otter, which I, Ron.Vorak, repainted for my use as Kapowsin SkyDive in this Scenery, and made a Macro for it, with the Freeware Program M98toBGL.By Trevor de Stigter. Thanks to you all.

Finally some STUFF:

This scenery is freeware and is copyrighted. You may not include this scenery in any pay-ware in any form, no matter what, no way, no how...without written consent from BOTH Ron Vorak and me.

Of course, you use this freeware with no guarantees, or warrantees of any kind. Its been tested and will undoubtedly work great, but if it were to cause a problem for you, you have only my sympathy.

If you'd like to upload this to any other sites, that's fine, just include this file completely and let me know, it's fun to follow where it's uploaded.

Feel free to share your comments and suggestions, my email is bob@aaahawk.com and Ron's email is Gamegttr@aol.com
